Tasting of the Month
Several times a year, we will put another beer in the spotlight.
Possibly not really into the rhythm of every month a different one,
but as regularly as possible.
Our preference will be primarly a beer that somehow has something
special to offer.
Especially will it be traditional beers who are brewed in limited
quantity, or who have a history that is worthy to mention. Others
will have some connection with my hometown. Oudenaarde is not for
nothing a "Beer City" with his anual beer festival.
But as we find more time to build our website, you will get here a
section with more history about the beers in my native region.
Tasting of the moment :
Barbar :
This beer takes you back to the roots of the craft of brewing. For centuries, the only known sweetener in Europe was honey. The beer is brewed with extremely pure well water. The company wants to remain true to the ingredients and methods which have been used for centuries.
Honey is added instead of sugar. The fair trade variety is sold under the Maya label. The Barbãr is golden in colour with a generous head. The mead aroma immediately reveals its origin. After shaking, the taste becomes more complex with a hint of milk, citrus fruit (candied lemon peel) and spices (coriander, ginger).
The first sip is broad but the acidity strengthens the beer and gives it a lovely balance and freshness. The aftertaste is smooth and refined, spicy like liquorice root and slightly sweet.
In an age where everything is done at top speed, now and again it is good to return to one's roots, to this drink that our ancestors referred to as the "warriors' rest".
